Colosseum of El Jem

The ancient colosseum of El-Jem is a dramatic and impressive sight, it is the largest colosseum in Nort Africa. Its seating capacity has been estimated at 35,000 spectators. It was the third largest in the Roman world; it was 138m long by 114m wide, with three tiers of seating 30m high. The colosseum is believed to have been built between AD 230 and 238, and was probably mainly used for gladiator shows and chariot races.
